As always, we’re planning for a great training year and look forward to working with you all. It looks like 2024 is going to be a big year of change. For instance there are some really big changes in the selection criteria and processes for many of the specialties. The SET programs have also been developed in various ways. On first glance, these can be frustrating for trainees and organizations. I’ve had quite a few conversations with residents and registrars recently about how it seems narrow minded by the colleges to change things so frequently - but at the end of the day, all we can do is adapt and address the rules as best we can. Developing how we deliver education, training and selection coaching is the main thing we focus on each year and even though colleges change how they take trainees into their system they are still looking to pick well trained doctors who care about their patients and are great to work with. This is the kind of trainee we want our system to develop. This is therefore the direction we need to keep in focus as we evolve our system. Focus items for the Pre SET group this year will include more directed and varied weekly teaching, strengthening our ties and collaboration with the surgical medical students and surgical consultants via the Academy and for the society members to get greater value out of the Pre SET society. Personally, I really hope we can have a big push on improving our ability to educate clinicians about - and therefore deliver environmentally sustainable surgery. All of these priorities are reflected in Pre SET society committee positions and with a starting lineup of 17 committee members we’re excited about the largest team ever. We want this to be a collaborative effort so any ideas - from anywhere - are very welcome. I would firstly like to congratulate Adrienne Lui, the PreSET committee and our PreSET doctors for their outstanding work and achievements during 2023. We are now seeing more and more face to face educational and social programs, while using our online resources in a balanced manner. The Pre-SET Society alongside St Vincent’s Academy of Surgeons have a jam packed calendar year. Starting with our Welcome night in February, ending with the ultimate TopGun Interunit Championships. Our programs are dynamic and evolving, with an aim to engage you - the young, passionate, motivated surgeon of the future. I can not stress enough how important it is for you to introduce yourself and get involved. RACS successful SET applications for our PreSET’s is a permanent goal for our society. Each college has its specific selection criteria which also constantly changes. General Surgery will see one of its biggest selection process changes over the next 2 years, impacting the scoring system and the number of successful applicants. This brings new hurdles and challenges for you. Having the resources and the expertise of the members of our societies, Michael and I will continue to help you push through these together. Having been at St Vincent’s in various capacities for over 10 years, I am humbled and honoured to be your Chief Surgical Resident this year. St Vincent’s has always been welcoming and friendly to me, and has provided support for me to grow and challenge myself; I hope it can continue to be the same for all those new and returning in 2024. The aim of the Pre-SET society is twofold; firstly, to improve surgery at St Vincent’s, and secondly, to improve those who do surgery at St Vincent’s. I’m pleased to welcome back our previous SVH staff and keen to meet the new members of our surgical team – of which there will be quite a few this year. I love to be able to start the year with a good dose optimism (real or imagined) and I genuinely feel (hope) this is going to be a good year. As we slowly settle into this new COVID existence we’ve become comfortable with a modified approach to meeting, training and education. There have been some positive changes which have come out of the last couple of years which would not have happened without a pandemic. 2022 provided us with an opportunity to live with COVID - and to train and operate and learn in new ways. I hope 2023 will allow us to push forward with this. In terms of our training program, we will continue our approach of tweaking and improving our teaching stalwarts. Our perennial aim is to provide and develop the best, most comprehensive Pre SET education and preparation. We want to look after our trainees, produce better doctors and get them onto the training programs of their choice – as good quality registrars. The GSSE, Reg Ready and weekly teaching programs will continue and will continue to evolve. We are very keen to strengthen and deepen our relationships with the St Vincent’s Surgical Academy and the St Vincent’s Surgical Students Society. Hopefully, a better mix of face to face and online contact will enable us to bond better as a training hub. As always, we are keen to hear your thoughts and feedback. I encourage you strongly to contact myself, Nicole Winter or one of your Pre-SET committee members if you have ideas on how we can do things better. We’re going to continue pushing with our SET preparation program, as led by Nicole Winter; and there will be a drive to extend this to as many specialties as possible. We’d like to map out a clear path for interested trainees to streamline the process and ideally make the journey a little bit shorter. This is another area where closer ties with the surgical academy will be fruitful. The newer aspects of our program will develop, and we are particularly keen on getting some feedback here. Specifically, we will be looking to move the GSSE course to an online program, we want to really expand the surgical TOP GUN competition and push the opportunities for research projects and collaborations. The surgical TOP GUN will be in its third year. Following on from previous Top Guns Dr Jade El Mohamed and Dr Marc Chia we are keen to see where we can get this competition. Even though it’s been a lot of fun so far, we will be looking to broaden the appeal of this event and reach out directly to some of the surgical specialties in 2023. We were pleased with the five (as far as I am aware) successful SET applicants from 2022. I congratulate them on their hard work and subsequent success and look forward to working them as they become Registrars. We look forward to similar success this year. I want to thank the outgoing chief surgical resident, Henry Badgery. Henry’s two years in the chief role were very impressive. As a hospital, for us to have such great leadership, two years in a row and during the hot COVID years was very fortunate. Henry helped us stabilise the program in a very tough period and he made some strong changes that will be remembered. Henry will complete the second year of his PhD this year before starting general surgical training in 2024. That leads us on to the Pre-SET committee. It was a great pleasure working with the team in 2022, one of the benefits of my supervisor role is the opportunity to engage with these motivated, passionate, high achieving young doctors. I thank them for their very hard work and look forward to working with many again. Finally, welcome back to Adrienne Lui as the 2023 chief resident. It’s great to have Adrienne back after her brief sojourn across the park. Adrienne is now a 4th year resident with an interest in cardiac surgery. She has been a terrific young doctor and has previously been really impactful as a Pre-SET committee member. I’m excited to have the possibility to work with her and see her develop her leadership skills this year. I am would firstly like to congratulate Henry Badgery, the PreSET committee and our PreSET doctors for a very successful 2022. We have settled into progressive and flexible ways of engagement and education. I am excited to see this flourish in the years to come. Our goals for 2022 were seen through the hard work of our PreSET committee with greater collaboration with the Academy of Surgeon’s and St Vincent’s Surgical Students’ Society. We saw the very first Registrar Ready day involving all 3 societies, and needless to say it was the most engaging, educational and let’s not underplay, the most “fun” event of the year. 2022 was a very successful year for GSET applications with 5 out of 6 interviewed applicants receiving an offer for training. Their success is a reflection of at least 3 years of preparation with St Vincent’s Hospital, PreSET Society support, PreSET biannual interview process, our GSET interview practice program and the immeasurable education provided during clinical terms. We will continue to run these programs and aim to improve them further with each year’s experience. One thing is for certain, the more you are involved, the more you will also achieve. We are very excited to have Adrienne Lui as our Chief Surgical Resident for 2023. Adrienne comes with several years of experience on the PreSET Society and lots of fresh new ideas leading our team this year.
